We spent the last Saturday of summer at the zoo!
The noises in the sheep and goat barn were a little loud, and then there was this horrific squealing from just outside. I went to investigate and discovered a pig getting drops put in his eyes. When I told the girls what was happening they understood that racket perfectly, they remember the pink eye drama of March 09 all too well.
Kate loved looking at these animals. Grace pulled her hood up for "privacy" and occasionally a muttered "Let's just move on!" could be heard from within.
Oh, for the life of me I can't remember what this antelope relative was called -- he was beautiful, though.
Suki admires the waterfowl -- can you spy Canadian geese, a swan, and a heron coming in for a landing?
There was a bird enclosure that we'd never discovered before -- you let yourself in and you can meander around these paths and try to spy little nesting birds. This one let the girls get very close.
It even allowed Kate to walk beside it down the path. Apparently these birds have had very gentle lives. I was very proud of my girls heeding the "look, don't touch" instructions.
This photo just cracked me up -- Kate's interested in the post, Suki's shuffling in some gravel, no one's looking at the birds.
Ah, the merry go round. The girls were clamoring for this from the moment we stepped inside the gates.
I know... this video makes it look like the most joyless merry go round ride ever. I have no idea how I managed to capture such a calm moment when there were actually lots of shrieks of joy and laughter.
Not from Kate, though. I think the combination of height plus movement sent Kate into a heretofore unseen state of concentration.
I was stunned when Suki walked right up, patted the horse and then allowed the assistant to pick her up and put her on the saddle.
Suki was very curious about all of the reasons this turtle might have its head in its shell. I didn't have the heart to tell her that one of the reasons might be a certain two year old pushing her nose against the glass two inches from the turtle's face.
