September 19, 2009

We spent the last Saturday of summer at the zoo!

The noises in the sheep and goat barn were a little loud, and then there was this horrific squealing from just outside. I went to investigate and discovered a pig getting drops put in his eyes. When I told the girls what was happening they understood that racket perfectly, they remember the pink eye drama of March 09 all too well.

David shows Suki how to feed the animals from a cup.
Suki takes a turn feeding goats.

Kate loved looking at these animals. Grace pulled her hood up for "privacy" and occasionally a muttered "Let's just move on!" could be heard from within.

Oh, for the life of me I can't remember what this antelope relative was called -- he was beautiful, though.

Suki looks at the squirrel monkeys.

Investigating the ring tailed lemurs.

Grace shows Gorilla the lemurs.

Near an adorable rhino -- by her reaction, I think Suki was half convinced it was real.

An alligator!

Suki admires the waterfowl -- can you spy Canadian geese, a swan, and a heron coming in for a landing?

Grace shows her goose the geese in the pond.

There was a bird enclosure that we'd never discovered before -- you let yourself in and you can meander around these paths and try to spy little nesting birds. This one let the girls get very close.

It even allowed Kate to walk beside it down the path. Apparently these birds have had very gentle lives. I was very proud of my girls heeding the "look, don't touch" instructions.

This photo just cracked me up -- Kate's interested in the post, Suki's shuffling in some gravel, no one's looking at the birds.

Admiring a civet.

Patting the lion.

Look out, Suki! It's right behind you!

We also found a new owl.

Suki whirls to see if I noticed the baby joey.

Ah, the merry go round. The girls were clamoring for this from the moment we stepped inside the gates.

I know... this video makes it look like the most joyless merry go round ride ever. I have no idea how I managed to capture such a calm moment when there were actually lots of shrieks of joy and laughter.

Not from Kate, though. I think the combination of height plus movement sent Kate into a heretofore unseen state of concentration.

Then we got in line for the pony rides.

We had plenty of time to wait and these two were having so much fun together.

Waiting.

Taking a break from line to say hello to David.

Grace's turn at last!

She had so much fun!

I was stunned when Suki walked right up, patted the horse and then allowed the assistant to pick her up and put her on the saddle.

It was her most independent time on a horse yet.

Yay, Suki!

Peeping at the koi and macaws.

Stroking a hedgehog.

Kate loved it!

Off to see the monkeys!

Kate was determined to go join her primate brethren.

Another baby joey!

Kate eventually did look in at these tortoises.

She also admired the mama and baby potbellied pigs.

Suki was very curious about all of the reasons this turtle might have its head in its shell. I didn't have the heart to tell her that one of the reasons might be a certain two year old pushing her nose against the glass two inches from the turtle's face.

Looking at two pythons.

Can you see the tarantula at the back left?

Suki by the axolotl.

Holding Kate up to see some ruffled chickens.

We had such a fun day together today.
