David's hard at work getting Grace's new helmet to fit properly. She knew going into the store that she wanted a red helmet and when we got there there was the usual selection of pink princess helmets, Dora themed helmets, and then the helmets marketed more toward boys (only boys featured on the packaging, lots of race cars, etc.). I was so pleased that she stuck to her idea of a red helmet. I wouldn't have stopped her if she'd chosen a different one but I really love it that she knows what she wants and then sticks with it.
This tricycle does not require a helmet as far as I'm concerned. No one ever moves at a pace faster than a slow walk and most often I'm pushing them rather than them pedaling.
And then she was off! For our girl, we knew that a two wheeled bike with pedals would require an awful lot of coordination and a strong chance that it wouldn't go smoothly on the first few tries, even with training wheels. Grace likes to get things right or just go home, so we wanted to take it in manageable steps for her. Her steering is pretty good, based on what she learned from the tricycle. For the next step, we opted for a balance bike, where she'll walk it at first, then coast a bit and develop her two-wheeled balance. Once she's nailed that, we'll move on to the pedaling on the next bike.
Kate took tentative steps today, a couple at a time. We are so proud of how she keeps trying at something that's so tough for her.
