Today we took a family trip to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, a companion facility to the National Air and Space Museum.
Our group gathered before the museum. You can see the giant hangar behind us that houses some of the planes in the museum's collection.
Looking at the shuttle and satellite replicas. It really was impressive walking into this huge space and seeing so many cool things.
From the NASM website: Enterprise is a full-scale test vehicle used for flights in the atmosphere and tests on the ground; it is not equipped for spaceflight. Although the airframe and flight control elements are like those of the Shuttles flown in space, this vehicle has no propulsion system and only simulated thermal tiles because these features were not needed for atmospheric and ground tests.
Then we went up into the observation tower. Because the tower is extremely close to Dulles Airport we got some great views of planes taking off and landing.
This is blurry because David and I didn't really think Kate would or could climb on this. The shutter snapped as I started to move toward her to haul her down and you can see David's shoe over there to the left as he was doing the same thing. The top of the pedestal was studded with bolts, I have no idea what tempted Kate to try to get on top but she surely succeeded.
Standing near some Amelia Earhart memorabilia, this photo perfectly illustrated why we really needed to get going at this point. We were rapidly approaching naptime and things were starting to fall apart.
Kate's shirt kept coming up and David thought she looked so cute with just overalls, so this is how she spent the evening.
