Today Grace and I attended her kindergarten orientation program. The school is less than half a mile from our house, so we walked. We plan to walk to school three days a week in the fall, but there are so many distracting things to see along the way I can't imagine how early we'll have to leave our house to do so.
Before we even got into the school, Grace had found a friend. You may remember Ally from preschool photos.
We watched a presentation put on by current kindergartners, and then Grace went back to a kindergarten classroom with current students and teachers to see how things work while I listened to a presentation given by the teachers and administrators. Grace left a necklace in the classroom by mistake, so we went back to retrieve it.
After we left the classroom, Grace wanted to show me the library. And when we got there, she loved seeing this orangutan!
Just a few of the neighborhood friends we saw in the library. They were so charmed by Grace and when they saw her enjoying the orangutan Erin showed her a monkey magazine and Hunter went to find her a book about orangutans. In a real show of trust, Erin and Hunter both wanted to check that book out for Grace under their accounts. Her pal Valentina saw her on her way in and tried to say hello too, but Grace was very focused on following the teacher's instructions. It is such a huge relief to be sending her to a school where there are so many friends already there, ready to welcome her!
Grace also practiced crossing streets by herself. Here she's crossing to me when she feels like it's safe, but she also led the way, choosing when to cross with me behind her not saying anything. She did a great job!
I suspect the teachers were trying to quickly assess where the children were (in addition to doing a fun craft) when they had the children color, cut, paste and write their names.
