March 28, 2010

Grady and David chat before Kate's Peter Rabbit birthday party.

Grady filled the vegetable balloons for the party and then some round balloons for the girls to decorate with stickers. Doesn't Grace's look like a gorilla?

Ready for our friends to arrive.

Rosemary and Cassandra came and we started coloring and enjoying some Annie's bunny snacks.

Viviana and Marcia, then Elisabeth, Madeline and Raia joined in.

Antonio chats with David and Rosemary in the kitchen.

Marcia and Grace talk together.

Granny smiles at Raia as she examines the winning coloring page -- winning in the sense that Elisabeth's had a carrot on the reverse side and she won the coveted Peter Rabbit chocolate rabbit. Grady talks to Stephan on the other side of the room.

I know some of you like to see details -- here was some of the food for our party.

Clockwise from the top left: our wee dessert buffet, with carrot cake, zucchini cakes shaped like vegetables, and chocolate cupcakes with marzipan vegetables and wafer rabbit; the mighty vegetable bouquet; bunny balloon over one last mystery carrot (we hid rabbit crayons, chocolate rabbits, pencils and stickers in a pastry bag filled with orange basket grass and tied the tops with green ribbon so they looked like carrots); one of the marzipan topped cakes; one tray of cupcakes; the carrot cake; the zucchini cakelets; our Peter Rabbit mantel, with books and bunnies on top and photos of Kate from each month along the edge.

Cassandra and Suki.

Suki has lunch with Cassandra and Viviana.

Rosemary, Kate and Marcia join them.

Stephan helps Grace put a straw in her juice box.

A fun balloon chase game with Elisabeth and Madeline.

Kate plays with Nishani, Jalal and Amir while some of our other guests hang out and enjoy some toys.

Pinata time!

I just loved this carrot pinata -- and I loved how the children lined up and I honestly thought they would actually take turns pulling ribbons.

Just look at crazy old me, explaining my vision.

It turned into roughly two waves of barely controlled tugging.

Look at how optimistic Jalal and Suki are, just hoping all the treats will fall in their bags.

We really do have such sweet, gentle friends -- I don't remember any pushing or grabbing during the whole pinata time. There was enthusiasm, but nothing wild.

Suki checks out a chocolate carrot.

Grace shows PaPa her collection of harmonica, yogurt covered raisins and chocolate carrots.

Looking through their loot.

Time for cake!

Antonio is looking at me this way because I climbed right on top of a chair to try to capture the crowd in on frame.

Catching sight of the candle topped cake.

So excited!

As anticipated, Kate tossed her marzipan vegetables onto the floor -- they were getting in the way of all of that cake! Cassandra was dismayed at her choice.

Putting it back on her plate.

Madeline and Grace chat.

Enjoying herself -very- much.

We decided to open gifts at the party, a departure from recent parties for us but it worked so well with this crowd -- they were great at helping Kate open her presents. I wish you could see how excited Kate was to open this book that turned into a car!

David thought it was so funny how often Kate's expression and mine matched when we couldn't see each other's faces.

After our last guests departed, this was how we found Kate, finishing all the cupcakes she could see.

After naps.

PaPa had to duck during a few throws from Suki.

What a fun day, a fun party, fun friends and a fun visit from Granny and PaPa!
