August 22, 2010

We love our drives to the Shenandoah Mountain and today we decided to explore along Skyline Drive.

Our little picnic started things off, but as Grace points out, there was a rainstorm brewing!

Looking warily at the clouds.

Rain! Soggy fries are no fun.

Tailgating picnics are, though.

Looking out at the view.

The bits of rain we had made from some beautiful fog.

Then we had some rock climbing to see a new view.

The view from the top.

My wee von Trapps.

Attempting our hike to Dark Hollow Falls.

We were told this would be an easy hike... but our little Kate was not so sure.

Suki and Grace were so interested in seeing the waterfalls, though -- we pressed on for a bit.

They were very excited to see this deer.

Can you see it in the background here?

Partway down, Kate and David decided to turn around and head back. Suki and Grace were sure they could hike back up every hill they went down... but the trail is a total of 1.4 miles (we went almost half of that, I'd say) and the elevation change is 440 feet. It was a strenuous climb back up.

My wee champions held their own, though, and we were very glad to see the top (and our car!) again.

Headed back home.

Our dear friends Marcia, Antonio, Valentina and Viviana had us over for dinner. It was lovely.

Kate's gotten very comfortable asking -any- mom for help getting cleaned up, getting something she needs, etc. So cute.

Viviana and Kate played this frog game for a while -- Viviana balanced it on Kate's head and then they both laughed hysterically when it fell off.

What fantastic friends.
