Warning: slightly gruesome medical post to follow.

Today was a pretty tough day for all of us. Grace was running and had a bad fall on the ceramic tile in the kitchen. I heard her scream and saw lots of blood everywhere. When I picked her up and cleaned her off, I could tell that she had a badly split lip but I didn't see any other damage. The lip was bad enough that I took her to the doctor's office right away, though. They sent us on to the ER for stitches and a plastic surgery consultation. I paged David, who joined us at the hospital. Luckily, no plastic surgery will be required but the stitches were pretty hard on us all. Grace couldn't stand to have anyone near her and cried a lot during every step of the admission process. For the stitches, they initially they had me hold a cotton ball soaked in numbing solution to her lip -- she shrieked and fought the entire time (five minutes of holding it on out of the forty minutes needed) and so we decided on an injection instead. The nurses wrapped her in sheets and held her down, David and Suki left the room because it was bothering Suki, I was at Grace's feet and talked to her through the injection and stitches. She cried a lot and was pretty freaked out, as you can imagine, but it was better than I thought it might be for her. Afterward the nurses gave her a stuffed duck and lamb and she absolutely loved those. She's only allowed meals through a straw for the rest of the day, so we got her a milkshake and she was happy as a clam. She'll be on antibiotics and sees the doctor tomorrow for a follow up. We are worn out from such a hectic morning but relieved she's okay.

Poor stitched up lip.

Enjoying her new duck and lamb.

A total superstar calm baby during the entire ordeal. Such a huge help on a day like today.
