Grace and I went to the Nutcracker today -- though she was feeling very discouraged at the time we took this photo. The reason? Somehow she'd gotten the idea this was a dance time free for all and had to agree to stay quietly in her seat for the entire performance before we could go. She was not pleased at all, but on the plus side it was a good way to reinforce the lesson that you choose your happiness. We told her that she could decide to be happy about going to the ballet on a special day out with me or she could choose to be sad about not being allowed to dance with the pros. She made a great choice and made it through the 2.5 hours at the ballet with lovely composure.
Meanwhile, Grace and I were off at Maggiano's for lunch. They have pasta, which Grace adores, plus they are in the theater district and open at lunch, which sealed the deal.
Grace and her two beverages -- no baby cups with lids here, and no spills at all. She was so grown up!
At intermission -- she wasn't surly, just a bit tired. It was nice, though, because it meant lots of cuddle time at the ballet.
Looking down into the orchestra pit at the end of intermission. She is in love with the bass and wishes she could play it.
After the performance, we went to the restaurant at the Ritz Carlton for dessert. They gave Grace a nutcracker sheet to color and a duck to enjoy and lots of praise and attention.
They also gave her half a dozen cookies, which was nice because that gave us plenty to bring home as a treat for Suki and Kate.
As we were on our way to the restroom, in an incredibly lucky move, Grace dropped her cup of orange juice. I say lucky because everyone was so kind about it -- they raced to get her a new cup of juice, complimentary cupcakes and a balloon. Everyone was so gentle and generous and from now on I fully expect her to toss a juice every time we go through a hotel lobby, just to reap the benefits.
Grace fell asleep on the train ride home, rallied in the car and then unwound with a Dora game for a little bit.
